About Kat Cunningham

With twenty-three years working in human services (fifteen in psychotherapy), I bring to the therapy room extensive experience in a range of treatment models and an understanding of different diagnoses and concerns. You bring to the room all there is to know about what it’s like to be you. In therapy we collaborate – informed by your own understanding of who you are and where you’ve come from, and the ‘lens’ of my expertise, we create a treatment plan that fits your needs.

Here’s a few of my ‘guiding principles’ that might give you a sense for what to anticipate if working with me:

1. Therapy only works if the client-therapist relationship works. I’m a straightforward, open, curious, occasionally-funny human and I truly love this work. I place considerable importance on my clients feeling safe and seen in therapy.

2. I believe that symptoms are signals and that a huge part of my job is supporting people to slow down and listen to these signals. To shift from a model of ‘illness’ to one in which we trust that the mind and body are trying to communicate.

3. People thrive when their life reflects their values. Finding happiness isn’t about feeling good or escaping the hard stuff, as much as it’s about living a life that’s authentic, meaningful and full of the things that make you ‘you’.

4. Healing takes place in a context of safety and compassion. Healthy relationships with others and most importantly an accepting and kind relationship with yourself are key in good psychological health.

5. Life works better when you spend time amongst trees and in the company of animals.
